Quick Trip: Round Valley Recreation Area

Round Valley is a nice place to try backpacking for the first time because of it’s scenic and convenient location. I will provide a quick overview of the area so you can get there soon!

Visiting the Round Valley Recreation Area

The recreation area surrounds the Round Valley Reservoir in Lebanon, New Jersey. This is a very popular destination for all types of activities such as hiking, boating, and camping because of it’s close proximity to New York City and the metro area. If you plan on camping, I strongly recommend making a reservation prior to arrival. The campsites are all pet friendly and can only be accessed by boat or hiking. For Backpackers, the campsites start at 3 miles from the parking lot and range up to 6 miles. There are bathrooms and water stations near the campsites.  Recreation area and camping information can be found here.

My Experience

Round Valley Reservoir @ Sunset

I really enjoyed camping here because it provided the sense of fulfillment you get backpacking with some the comforts of a traditional campground. The campsites are spaced far apart so you will have some seclusion and many of them border the beautiful shoreline. Campers have to carry everything needed in with them, but there are water stations therefore you only have bring the water needed for the hike in. If you aren’t sure what gear is needed, check out The Introduction to Backpacking Gear. The campsites also have fire rings and picnic tables!

I checked in at the park office early afternoon and then proceeded to the parking lot, which is adjacent to the trail entrance. The trail varies in terrain and has some large inclines and rocky portions, but it is very manageable for all skill levels. Along the trail, you will see mountain bikers, day hikers, Boy Scout troops, and everyone in between. I arrived to the campsite in about 2 hours and had plenty of time to setup camp and take in the scenery before nightfall. The next morning I packed up and was back at the car by 11:30am. This was a great overnight trip and I will be back!
